About Us

We, the members of the First Congregational Church of Washington CT, believe that all people are vessels of God’s grace. We strive to be an inclusive Christian community of unconditional love and sanctuary that inspires all individuals regardless of ability, age, culture, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, race, sexual orientation, or social standing. Following Jesus’ commandment to love God and our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:28-34), we openly welcome and affirm all who wish to participate in the fellowship, leadership, and spiritual growth of our congregation and to join us as we explore the many ways that God is still speaking. No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

Together, we seek meaning in life's mystery, strength for its challenges, and grace for the journey. We take the Bible seriously, but not literally, as we seek God and endeavor to follow the teachings of Christ.

* Worship and serve God in the presence of a welcoming spiritual community that is open to differing beliefs.

* Develop a deeper, more rewarding, personal relationship with God.

* Receive support and encouragement during times when you need spiritual nourishment or direction.

* Serve others in our community and around the world who are in need of our resources, time, talents, and compassion.

Our roots go back to the Pilgrims and Puritans, and the birth of our country. Our founders believed in each person's direct relationship with God and in the authority of the local congregation to shape church decisions and activities. Today, we are part of a larger denominational community, the United Church of Christ (UCC), but we still believe in and practice the same principles.

Safe Church Policy

It is a priority of this church to assure that we provide a safe space in which all can flourish.  If you are interested in how our church protects the most vulnerable among us, you can download a copy of our Safe Church Policy.  You may direct any questions about this policy to our Director of Personnel.
