Missions/ Outreach

Missions Chair: Jim Esslinger

Missions and Outreach are an important focus for our chuch.  Because we recognize the needs of both local neighbors as well as those brothers and sisters who are part of the greater global community, we support missions and outreach to various efforts and organizations that benefit both.  Some support is financial, some through prayer, and some through hands-on work.  All of these benefit not only those others in need but also the call within our own souls to reach out and be a part of God's answer to the cries of a hungry and hurting world.

In January and February 2021, our focus is on the United Church of Christ's Neighbors in Need Fund, supporting Justice and Witness ministries throughout the US.  You can find out more by clicking here.

Below are a few of the ministries we support as well as opportunities for you to join us in active outreach:

Local     Global

Annual AngelTree of Gift Tags (Seasonal) - Provide Christmas gifts for children in need served by one of the non-profits in Waterbury or Torrington this Christmas by taking a tag off the tree and returning your gift(s) in November.  Contact the church office for more information.

Greenwoods Counseling Referral LLC  - Greenwoods is committed to helping individuals, families, children and the elderly get access to fast, confidential referrals to professional counseling and medical help.  They also financial help for counseling.

Judea Garden - "The Giving Garden"

Loaves and Fishes of New Milford - Open 365 days per year, Loaves and Fishes of New Milford provides a hot meal every day for those in need.  They also provide nutritious bagged lunches for guests to take for the next day if they wish.  Some walk for miles to get there, lately we have seen more families with children in attendance.  This mission relies on donations of food from the community and organizations and individuals who offer their time and meals to the guests who dine there.

The First Congregational Church of Washington prepares and serves a hot meal every 5th Thursday of the month.  This happens four times each year.  See below for upcoming opportunities to join in on this very important local mission.

Volunter opportunities include:

Cooking and Baking - Sign up to make or purchase any of the items on our menu for this meal and drop off in the Parish House kitchen on the designated dates.

Sourcing Supplies/Food Donations - We welcome anyone who wishes to get donations of food from local merchants that can be used to make these meals.  These include meats, vegetables, fruit and other grocery items.

Serving the Meal - We need four people to set up, make bag lunches if needed, serve, and clean up.  Servers must be able to be at the Loaves and Fishes kitchen in the New Milford social services building no later than 3:30 on the designated Thursday.  The group is usually done between 5:30 and 6 PM.

Use our interactive form to sign up for our next service date.

These activities are not a large investment of time, but they yeild huge reward.  Contact the church office for more information.

Back Bay Mission - A community ministry of the United Church of Christ, the Back Bay Mission is located in Biloxi, Mississippi and serves the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the wider church community by faithful witness for social justice and compassionate service to the poor and marginalized.

Church World Service (CWS) - CWS has worked for seven decades with one goal: building a world where there is enough for all. They affirm the power of individuals and communities to take ownership of their future. They meet them right where they are, helping them create solutions they can maintain – and build on. That means a refugee family who is able to start a new life. Or someone rebuilding after disaster finds safety with dignity.   We support CWS by assembling School Kits, Hygiene Kits, and Emergency Clean-Up Buckets and welcome anyone who wishes to lend a hand or donate for supply costs.

Hopital Albert Schweitzer - Click on their name to visit the website and learn more about how the Hopital Albert Schweitzer has been saving lives, and changing lives, for more than 50 years.

Simply Smiles - As the name implies, Simply Smiles works to create smiles on the faces of impoverished children. Those moments, those smiles, are mandatory building blocks toward providing a child with a bright future. Just as important as food, clothing, shelter, and education is the emphasis we place on developing memories of happiness and joy for those in our care.  (We help with that, too!)
We throw birthday parties for children living in orphanages, break piñatas with starving children in the jungle, and spend Christmas morning handing out presents to children living in a garbage dump.
We believe creating just one smile on a child’s face can change their life forever. We’ve seen it a thousand times, and we cherish each and every time a child Simply Smiles…

Our Church's Wider Mission - Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM) Basic Support and Special Support provide funding for the work of UCC Conference and National ministries in support of the life and work of the local church and its members. OCWM changes lives by strengthening our ecumenical relationships and global partnerships, by imagining and embodying a better world through prophetic witness and work, and by providing resources and programs to nurture the vitality of our United Church of Christ congregations.
