Judea eNews for August 18 - Praying and Making Ritual

Dear Friends,

We begin a new faith practices topic this week: Praying and Making Ritual.  That is planned for this time of year because we naturally have so many rituals at the end of the summer and beginning of a new (school) year.  If you look at your lives, there are probably quite a few secular rituals you perform on a semi-regular basis, too.  The inspiring, comforting, healing effect of rituals is actually backed up by science.  Scientists have found that rituals can have a causal effect on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.  So come for the blessing and the comfort and the inspiration and explore rituals and prayer with us as we hold some special services over the coming weeks.  You can read more about each in the announcements in the right sidebar.

  • August 27, 10 am - Blessing of the Backpacks, Students and Educators
  • September 3, 10:30 am - Honoring our Work and Blessing of the Tools of Our Trades at the annual joint service with Salem Covenant Church at the Pavilion at Washington Primary School
  • September 10, 10 am - Homecoming Service and Mixing of the Waters, followed by our annual "Last Gasp of Summer" picnic on the Green

Summer Camp Sundays will continue for the next two weeks then regular format Sunday School begins on September 10.  Carrie Loyd will be leading Summer Camp Sunday School and Sue Elliott will be on hand for nursery care this week, if needed.  If you have little ones, be assured they will be well nurtured by our staff on Sunday!

Even if you have been reading the announcements every week and perhaps tempted to skip them this week, please make special note of the second announcement regarding Loaves and Fishes volunteers.  This new announcement seeks to collect the names and years of service for anyone who has volunteered for any length of time for this mission.  And we are still looking for a few more food items for our service date on August 31.  If you have not already signed up, please pick something and help out!

And through the rest of the summer, we are still collecting food for the Washington-Warren food bank.  Check the announcement on the right with the latest update and the featured “food of the week” we are requesting.

Hoping to see you on Sunday!
